Abstract

This work studies the functions and elements inherent to the loa taking into account three points of analysis: its circumstantial nature - the reason behind its creation and performance and that connects it with contemporary reality; the conditions behind its production and, lastly, the circumstances surrounding its recipients and the spaces where theatrical performances happened. To that end, this topic has been studied through the analysis of historiographical, literary, iconographic and scenographical works that have been published prior to this dissertation. In addition to bringing forth a general analysis of the genre –its origins, functions and typologies—this dissertation has revolved around the analysis of two of its main modalities, the loa entremesada palaciega and the one aimed at introducing new theatrical companies. We have taken into account verbal and nonverbal components. The latter are especially crucial in palace celebrations with the arrival to Spain of Italian scenographers in the second decade of the seventeenth century...
