Abstract
This thesis arises from the awareness from many journalists for about a decade of the radical change that has occurred in media companies all around the world. Quoting Mass Media expert Professor Robert Picard, at a conference in Madrid of March 1, 2013, he said: "what is happening to the newspapers is part of a massive change in society and the way that we access information and that is coming to us because of the changes in the development of information in society [...] I mean, it’s affecting social relations, it’s affecting business arrangements in all kinds of industries, it’s affecting the roles of institutions and individuals in society and so we can’t think of this change as just being something that’s happening to the press but it’s a broader kind of change that’s taking place in society as a whole".1 So, what this thesis is intended for is to analyze in Spain, within a specific period (2007-2014), how these changes have affected, and what the future holds for Communication Groups (Editorial Unit, Prisa and Vocento) and its flagships in the general press (El Mundo, El Pais and ABC, respectively). The study period was chosen because 2007 coincides with the beginning of an economic crisis, and also because that year a strong social change was produced in the way we communicate and obtain information: the widespread use of Smart phones. Therefore, on the one hand we will study the Annual Accounts (Balance Sheet and Profit and Loss Accounts) both of large groups and their leading newspapers, and on the other hand we will make a brief study of the social changes that have occurred in relation to Information consumption studying topics as the use of smart phones, the credibility of young people in the information they get from traditional media, the palpable differences in interest in being informed between generations, and many other factors determining the current status of the printed media...
