Abstract
This study has the aim of provide a general overview around the projection of Chile in the 19th century to the Pacific, especially in those areas located in what we currently call Oceania, Polynesia and part of Asia, for the period between 1800 and 1888. This periodization has been chosen due to the huge and extremely importance that these two dates have for our study. On the one hand, in 1800, took place one of the first documented efforts to join, in the commercial field, the Chilean territory with some areas of Asia; while, on the other hand, 1888 is the year in which The Easter Island was definitely added to the Chilean State, becoming this event, in one of the most determining facts and a point of inflection, in order to create a linkage between the South American Country and/with the Pacific. This Thesis is structured in six chapters, and divided in two parts. The first one, pursue to understand/explained the different attempts that tried to connect both riversides of the Pacific Ocean, and their historical background; at the same time that we analyse the commercial flow existent in those latitudes, principally between Chile and some of the Pacific lands. The second part of this research consider/address the issue of how the precedent contacts and relations have been consolidated by Chile in some areas of Asia and the Pacific Ocean, through the establishment of consular representations, as of 1845. In order to achieve our goal, we have visited libraries and historical records from Chile, Spain, United States, England and Mexico. Finally, the investigation ends providing, among other aspects, unpublished information and details not only about the Chilean projection to the Pacific Ocean in the 19th century, but also about the people who make it possible, especially in/at the consular level.
