Abstract
The Buen Paso reservoir, located in the island of Tenerife, was waterproofed with ageomembrane of plasticized polyvinyl chloride, PVC-P with a polyester fabric. After 66months, due to its poor condition, it was decided to re-waterproof the reservoir with a highdensity polyethylene (HDPE) geomembrane, which was placed directly over the PVC-Pgeomembrane, without any kind of geosynthetic material between them. The placement ofthe two geomembranes, in direct contact, makes the Buen Paso reservoir an unprecedentedcase in the literature. The objective of this work was to study:- The causes of the poor performance of the geomembrane of PVC-P.- The performance of the HDPE geomembrane, the evolution of its characteristics, anddetected pathologies.- The possible interaction between the two geomembranes as well as the effects of thisinteraction on the durability of the HDPE geomembrane.Geomembranes, because of they are exposed outdoors, are changing their characteristics asa consequence of the aging of the materials, mainly by the action of the ultraviolet radiation, the temperature and the stresses to which they are subjected over time. In order to studytheir performance and the causes of degradation, geomembranes characteristics have beenmonitored by conducting tests on samples extracted from different areas of the reservoir...
