Abstract
Este trabajo consiste en una revisión bibliográfica que tiene como objetivo conocer los aspectos más recientes de la enfermedad del sueño en lo referente al tratamiento, la epidemiología y la biología del parásito. En él, se describe porque Trypanosoma brucei gambiense y Trypanosoma brucei rodhesisense consiguen infectar al hombre y porque otras especies no pueden hacerlo. También se detalla cómo el parásito consigue mantenerse en sangre y llegar al sistema nervioso central, los procesos de diferenciación y de apoptosis que regulan los niveles de parasitemia y el desarrollo de formas capaces de proseguir el ciclo biológico en el vector. En cuanto a la terapia, se especifican los nuevos tratamientos que se encuentran en ensayo clínico y nuevas formulaciones del tratamiento clásico que evaden la resistencia al fármaco o disminuyen los efectos adversos.
This work consists of a bibliographic review that aims to know the latest aspects of sleeping sickness in relation to treatment, epidemiology and biology of the parasite. In it, it is described why Trypanosoma brucei gambiense and Trypanosoma brucei rodhesisense get to infect humans and why other species cannot. It also detailed how the parasite manages to stay in blood and reach the central nervous system, the processes of differentiation and apoptosis that regulate the levels of parasitemia and the development of forms capable of continuing the biological cycle in the vector. Regarding therapy, there are specified the new treatments that are in clinical trials and new formulations of classical treatment that evade drug resistance or reduce the adverse effects.
