Abstract
The main purpose of this research project is to carry out a study to confirm if the pupils who are studying in elementary schools and high schools in the Community of Madrid in a bilingual system are achieving the expected results, whether at the end of their secondary studies, they are fully bilingual in Spanish and in English. Our experience points out some gaps in this system, which prevent our students from assimilating some concepts in their mother tongue. We want to verify this idea and highlight the areas of improvement in order to achieve the best conditions for this bilingual education. This research project begins with a brief presentation of the definitions of the term bilingual as well as some related terms (bilingualism, bilingual education) found in the previous bibliography. We then introduce some studies and discussions related to this topic. These studies and discussions demonstrate that an agreement has never been reached to define these terms and that nowadays the existence of different degrees proficiency in two languages has been established depending on different social, psychological and linguistic factors. Moreover, we have summarized several of the theories and hypotheses about bilingualism that experts such as Cummins developed, like the Interdependence hypothesis and some other approaches about language learning and the factors that influence it (age, input and motivation among others). Before continuing with the research project, we offer some information about the different bilingual systems that currently exist in the elementary schools and high schools in the Community of Madrid and offer a comparison of their features in relation to the teaching staff and the subjects that are taught in each language...
