Abstract
El objetivo de esta tesis es acercar al lector la única novela del autor portugués Félix Machado de Silva y Castro, que es prolongación de uno de nuestros grandes monumentos literarios: la obra de Mateo Alemán, Guzmán de Alfarache. La importancia y calidad literaria de esta continuación, dignas de mención, así como el escaso interés suscitado entre los estudiosos de la literatura, me han servido de impulso para elaborar la primera edición crítica del texto. El trabajo que aquí se presenta se compone, principalmente, de dos partes. La primera trata de clarificar los más de cuantos aspectos relacionados con el texto pudieran ser obstáculo para su lectura. Para ello, se ha elaborado un estudio donde se abordan algunas de las cuestiones fundamentales que permiten situar la obra dentro de su contexto histórico y literario, como también integrarla dentro de la tradición a la que pertenece, estableciendo todas las conexiones con su predecesora, así como con otros autores y obras de las que se advierten claras influencias. La segunda es, en sí misma, la primera edición crítica a la que esta Tercera parte de Guzmán de Alfarache se ha visto sometida. En ella, se han intentado limar todas las dificultades textuales que la novela plantea, mediante la fijación de los oportunos criterios y la inclusión de un aparato de notas que ayude a solventar cualquier incomprensión, ya sea de tipo lingüístico, cultural, histórico, gráfico o puramente literario. En definitiva, pretende ser el trabajo que aquí se ofrece material para futuros investigadores con semejantes inquietudes, pero quiere también poner en valor una obra hasta ahora deconocida por el lector común, testimonio inestimable, que arroja nueva luz sobre la evolución, declive y caída de un género capital de nuestra prosa áurea: el picaresco.
The central aim of this thesis is to bring to the reader the only novel by the Portuguese author Félix Machado de Silva y Castro, which is the extension of one of our great literary monuments: the work of Mateo Alemán, Guzmán de Alfarache. The importance and literary quality of this continuation, which is remarkable, as well as the little interest aroused among the critics, have helped me as an impulse to develop the first critical edition of the text. The work presented here is composed, mainly, of two parts. The first tries to clarify most of the aspects related to the text that could be an obstacle to its reading. To this end, a study has been developed which addresses some of the fundamental issues that allow to situate the work within its historical and literary context, as well as integrating it into the tradition to which it belongs, establishing all the connections with its predecessor, as well as with other authors and works of which clear influences can be noticed. The second is, in itself, the first critical edition to which this Third part of Guzmán de Alfarache has been subjected. In it, I have tried to file all the textual difficulties that the novel entails, by fixing the appropriate criteria and the inclusion of a note apparatus that helps to solve any misunderstanding, whether linguistic, cultural, historical, Graphic or literary. in short, the work presented here is intended to be material for future researchers with such inquisitiveness, but it also wants to put in value a work hitherto unknown by the public, inestimable testimony, which sheds new light on the evolution, decline and fall of a capital genre of our golden prose: the picaresque fiction.
