Abstract
One of the main objectives in Forensic Anthropology is to determine the sex of the remains under study. It is not always possible to recover the remains which determine the sex with a high fiability, as pelvis or cranium, so new studies over the postcraneal skeleton are necessary to discover its discriminant power. Due to the differences found between populations it is necessary to perform specific studies over them, so the variability of the Spanish population also need to be studied. Differences in the muscular development, the quantitly-quality bone levels and the physical activity level could explain the differences found between males and females, existing a sexual dimorphism on the human specie that makes possible to determine sex from its bones, being one bones more discriminant than others. Regarding the existing methods to determine sex from an skeletal remain there are mainly two: the morphologic and metric methods. The morphologic method is commonly used on the cranium and pelvis and the metric method on the rest of the postcranial skeleton. The bone volume study to determine sex seems not having aroused a big interest because few studies are found that have described the discriminant power of this variable. This could be due to the lack of reliable techniques to calculate it, not for thinking that the variable volume was not going to discriminate sex well. On the published studies the researchers calculated the volume using the displacement fluid technique, showing the inconvenience of immersing the bone in water and being part of the liquid absorbed by the bone because of its porosity, not being accurate the volume calculation. Nowadays the new advancements on 3D technology make possible to digitalize the bone and calculate its volume in a reliable manner using informatic tools. Four bones of the postcraneal skeleton were selected to perform the present study, considering its morfology, size and easy manipulation to be digitalized correctly, and also considering their anatomical position in the body; talus, radius, clavicle and patella. The main objective of this thesis is to analize the discriminant power of the variable volume on the talus, radius, clavicle and patella to determine sex and offer clasification functions that can be applied over spanish population...
