Abstract
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal genetic disorder caused by different mutations in the CFTR gene, which codifies a transmembrane chloride/bicarbonate transporter that is mostly expressed in secretory epithelial cells. CFTR dysfunction leads to an hydroelectrolytic imbalance and to the production of abnormally thick and dehydrated exocrine secretions, that are responsible of the symptoms of the disease. Respiratory disease is the most severe manifestation of CF as it causes the death of at least 80% of the patients through respiratory failure or other complications. A polymicrobial chronic colonization, derived from the impairment of the normal mucociliary clearance, is the responsible of the respiratory symptoms of CF. The life expectancy of CF patients has dramatically increased since the first description of the disease in the 1930s, due to different advances introduced inpatients' management.
