Abstract
The current PhD thesis aims at reflecting on the literacy process of foreign children who join the Spanish education system at a later age due to coming from another country, among other reasons. To give response to the necessities of such group of students, an experimental programme to achieve literacy in Spanish as a second or foreign language has been created, which aims at facilitating the academic and social integration of the foreign students. This innovative literacy programme will allow students to do the three following tasks: read, write, and communicate with others, which will in turn ensure they are able to follow the curriculum in the target language. This is a significant proposal that increases the students‘ interest in the subject and encourages them to reflect on their own learning process. Thus, apart from being significant in giving response to the basic needs of the learner, the contents proposed also make the student aware of what he/she is achieving when he/she is reading and writing, thanks to the use of motivational activities that agree with his/her understanding of the world. Besides, it combines theoretical knowledge and practical activities (i.e. group dynamics, plays, cards) to facilitate the process of developing literacy skills. However, the programme does not only aim at improving the literacy of the students, but also their self-esteem: learning a new language involves dealing with a new culture and behaviour, which occasionally can lead to reject one‘s own culture, and this programme will prevent that from happening...
