Abstract
Esta Tesis Doctoral tiene como objetivo esencial el desentrañar los significados doctrinales que encierran algunos elementos simbólicos representados en muchas imágenes de la Anunciación en los siglos XIV y XV. Entre tales elementos sobresalen –en unas u otras de tales imágenes— un tallo de lirio en manos del ángel o en un florero o jarrón, una puerta cerrada, una escenografía en forma de templo o iglesia, un haz de rayos de luz descendiendo hacia el oído de la Virgen, una paloma volando hacia María, la figura (total o parcial) de un adulto levitando en medio de una mandorla en lo más alto del cuadro, o un pequeño niño desnudo, a menudo portando una cruz, siguiendo la estela del rayo luminoso. Las interpretaciones iconográficas que hemos propuesto sobre esos elementos simbólicos las hemos fundamentado caso por caso en los argumentos dogmáticos brindados por una innúmera pléyade de Padres de la Iglesia y teólogos greco-orientales y latinos cuando dilucidaron unánimemente durante más de un milenio algunas citas del Antiguo Testamento conforme a interconectadas proyecciones cristológicas y mariológicas. Para desarrollar esta investigación, utilizamos un doble y complementario enfoque metodológico. Ante todo, un enfoque empírico-analítico, basada en el riguroso análisis de todos los datos concretos obtenidos tanto en los escritos doctrinales como en las imágenes de la Anunciación que consideramos pertinentes. En segunda instancia, como necesaria culminación del proceso investigador, un enfoque sintético-hermenéutico, que, tras constatar la esencial correspondencia recíproca entre los datos empíricos obtenidos en las fuentes primarias doctrinales y en las imágenes de la Anunciación analizadas, nos permitió interpretar iconográficamente en esas imágenes una serie de metáforas visuales que ilustran en forma elocuente las metáforas textuales contenidas en algunos pasajes bíblicos, tal como fueron interpretados en unánime sintonía durante más de un milenio por incontables Padres y teólogos de las Iglesias Greco-oriental y Latina.

The aim of this Doctoral Thesis is to unravel the doctrinal meanings enclosed in some symbolic elements represented in many images of the Annunciation in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The most relevant of such elements are –in one or another of these images— a stem of lilies depicted in the hands of the angel or inside a vase, a closed door, a scenography in the form of a temple or church, a beam of rays of light descending towards the ear of the Virgin, a pigeon flying towards Mary, the figure (complete or fragmentary) of a levitating adult in the middle of a mandorla at the top of the painting, or a little naked child, often carrying a cross, following the stele of the lighting rays. The iconographic interpretations here proposed of these symbolic elements are based on a case-by-case analysis of the dogmatic arguments offered by an innumerable pleiad of Fathers and theologians of the Greek-Oriental and Latin Church when they unanimously elucidated for over a millennium certain quotations from the Old Testament according to interconnected Christological and Mariological projections. Our research has been conducted by following a double and complementary methodological approach. First and foremost this study draws on an empirical, analytic approach, based on the rigorous analysis of all the concrete data extracted from doctrinal writings and from images of the Annunciation relevant for our discussion. Secondly, as a necessary culmination of the research process, a synthetic, hermeneutic approach has been adopted, which, after observing the essential reciprocal correspondence between the empirical data obtained from the primary doctrinal sources and from the analyzed images of the Annunciation, has allowed us to interpret iconographically in these images a series of visual metaphors that eloquently illustrate the textual metaphors contained in some biblical passages, as interpreted in unison for more than a millennium by countless Fathers and theologians of the Greek-Oriental and Latin Church.
