Abstract
Durante la Segunda República y la Guerra Civil hubo algunos religiosos, como Juan García Morales, que valientemente defendieron una profunda reforma social en España, lo que les llevó a enfrentarse a las derechas y las altas cúpulas eclesiásticas. Este posicionamiento les obligó, tras el fin de la contienda bélica, a exiliarse en el extranjero. En el presente artículo analizaremos la trayectoria personal y pública del sacerdote republicano en suelo francés. Nos aproximaremos a su paso por las colonias infantiles o a su internamiento en el campo de Gurs. Para reconstruir esta desconocida etapa vital hemos recurrido al testimonio inédito de un familiar lejano, así como a diferentes archivos españoles y franceses, y a multitud de referencias hemerográficas.
during the Second Republic and the Spanish Civil War there were some priests, like for instance Juan García Morales, who bravely stood up for a deep social reform in Spain. This alignment led them to clash with the Rightists and the Catholic hierarchy and, many of them, were forced into exile after the end of the War. In this article we will analyze the personal development and the public experience of this Republican priest on French soil. In this regard, we will consider his stay in the children’s camp and his internment in the Gurs camp. To reconstruct this unknown chapter of his vital experience we have used an unpublished testimony of a distant relative as well as several documents from Spanish and French archives and many press references.
