Abstract
La esclerosis múltiple (EM) es una enfermedad autoinmune crónica del sistema nervioso central que induce desmielinización, inflamación y daño axonal. Este último es el responsable de la discapacidad que sufren los pacientes. Aparece mayoritariamente en la segunda y tercera década de la vida y es más frecuente en mujeres que en hombres (ratio 3/1). La etiología de la enfermedad se desconoce, aunque se han identificado diferentes factores ambientales que favorecen la aparición de la enfermedad en individuos genéticamente predispuestos. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune chronic disease of the central nervous system inducing demyelination, inflammation and axonal damage, which is responsible for the neurological damage suffered by MS patients. It appears mainly in the second and third decades of life and is more frequent in women than in males (ratio 3/1). The exact causes of the disease are unknown, although there are different environmental factors that favor the appearance of the disease in genetically predisposed individuals.
