Abstract
The project of legalizing medical marijuana is currently an issue of enormous significance and it demands to be dealt with. Hence it is required to be aware of the basics of cannabis, which encompasses botany, pharmacology (pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics), therapeutic applications and biological effects. Such knowledge allows us to raise awareness of the current scientific and legislative state and to project a route to undertake regarding this matter. The situation is that nowadays, medical cannabis has not yet been approved for its therapeutic administration. Both, the lack of proved evidence and its harmful consequences –which, though not lethal, have strong adverse health effects-, increase the controversy for its legalization. This is the reason why more studies are needed on this matter, and it would be especially interesting if they focused on the isolated active components of the species. Thus, the need to use the entire plant is excluded, for some of its specific compounds can be equally effective and the consequence would be a decrease of its adverse effects and the eradication of possible addictive, pathological, limiting or other unsafe behaviors.
