Mención especial merece el continuo crecimiento en la demanda de contenido multimedia (particularmente vídeo), que ocupa gran cantidad del total de la información que circula, lo que obliga a la infraestructura de red a brindar mayor velocidad, flexibilidad y calidad de servicio. The development of new services and applications online, both in fixed landlines and inmobile devices, has led to an exponential growth in traffic circulating on the Internet.
