Abstract
La enfermedad de ojo seco (EOS) es uno de los motivos más frecuente de consulta médica, especialmente en atención primaria y en oftalmología. En el informe emitido por Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society en el año 2007, se estima que la patología de ojo seco afecta al 5 – 30 % de la población mayor de 50 años1. Sin embargo, según el informe publicado en el año 2017, contabilizando los pacientes que mostraron síntomas relacionados con dicha patología, independientemente de la presencia o no de signos clínicos, el número de pacientes afectados asciende hasta el 50%. El número de afectados alcanza el 75% en los estudios basados principalmente en los signos de esta patología2. Por este motivo, la patología de ojo seco es considerada una de las enfermedades del siglo XXI...
Dry eye disease is one of the most frequent consultations in medical practice, particularly in primary health care and ophthalmology. In 2007, the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society (TFOS) reported that the prevalence of dry eye disease ranged from 5% to 30% in individuals over the age of 5027. According to the estimation published in 2017, the prevalence increased to 50% considering symptoms. However, the prevalence based on signs alone was much higher, reaching up to 75% in some populations28. Consequently, dry eye disease is considered one of the diseases of the 21st century.Dry eye is a multifactorial disease of the ocular surface characterized by a loss of homeostasis of the tear film. Tear film instability and hyperosmolarity damage the ocular surface, either directly or indirectly, starting a series of chain events involving the inflammation and deterioration of ocular surface, neurosensory abnormalities, in addition to complex clinical symptoms that significantly worsen the patient´s quality of life...
