Abstract
The Libro de casos impensados, by Alonso de Salamanca, is an epic poem written by a Spanish soldier captive in Constantinople after the loss of Tunis and La Goleta to the Ottoman Empire in 1574. It is preserved in a manuscript in the Royal Library (Madrid), and its existence has been known since 1992, but it has never been published until now. In addition to offering a broad historical introduction to the events that occurred in 1574 and their antecedents, this study places Alonso de Salamanca's text in the context of the “captive literature” of the time, analyzing its motivations and determining factors, since these writings are marked by the absence of freedom from which they are conceived and also by the socio-political situation of the Mediterranean in the 16th and 17th centuries. The historical character of Alonso de Salamanca and all the information and textual references that we have about him are also introduced in the study, along with the analysis of the manuscript in the context of the Spanish epic of the 16th century, one of the most prolific genres of this century...
