Abstract
La Parálisis Cerebral Infantil (PCI) es la discapacidad más severa y frecuente durante la infancia, y conlleva una serie de secuelas de tipo motor, cognitivo y sensorial. El carácter multifactorial de esta patología hace que el estudio de su etiología sea especialmente complejo, no obstante, una de las principales causas de PCI es la prematuridad y el peso del recién nacido. Se consideran prematuros extremos (PE) y de extremado bajo peso al nacer (EBPN) a aquellos que nacen antes de la semana 25 y que pesan menos de 1000 g, respectivamente. Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most severe and frequent disabling disease in childhood, including motor, cognitive and sensorial sequelae. Studies on CP causes are difficult because of its multifactorial etiology. Anyway, low gestational age and/or birth weight are major determinants pf CP . Extreme preterm (EP) and extreme low birth weight (ELBW) newborns are those under 25 weeks of gestational age and 1000 g of birth weight, respectively. Due to the immaturity of central nervous system (CNS) in those babies, both EP and ELBW have been considered of highest risk to develop CP. An important factor explaining such a high risk is the high incidence of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in those patients. IVH is the most common type of cerebral hemorrhage in newborns and a major cause of white matter injury (WMI) and then of CP development...
