Abstract
El discurso que se produce, tanto en la prensa como en la literatura entre mediados de siglo XIX y principios del XX en Puerto Rico, manifiesta una urgencia particular por emancipar a la mujer que, excluida al igual que en el resto del mundo de los derechos más elementales que se les reconocían a los hombres, padecía, atrapada y sin esperanzas, las injusticias de que era objeto. A través de periódicos y revistas dedicadas al “bello sexo”, los intelectuales más prominentes de la isla lograron convertir en objeto de discusión la situación de desigualdad y opresión en que se encontraba la mujer puertorriqueña en el umbral del siglo XX. El discurso de los liberales incitó a las mujeres a producir su discurso. En manos de las féminas, las publicaciones al “bello sexo” se transformaron en espacio de construcción de la mujer moderna, independiente y dispuesta a superarse, de la ciudadana, comprometida con la transformación del país y del sujeto político, listo para dirigir la lucha por los derechos...
The discourse that appeared, both in the press and the literature, between the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Puerto Rico, expressed a particular urgency toward the emancipation of women. There were excluded, as in the rest of the world, of most basic rights recognized to men. Women were trapped and hopelessly suffered many injustices to which there were subjected. Through newspapers and magazines dedicated to the “beautiful sex”, the most prominent intellectuals in the Island managed to make the situation of inequality and oppression on Puerto- Rican women at the turn of the 20th century the object of an important discussion.The liberal’s expressions prompted women to produce their own speech. By the hands of these women, “the beautiful sex” publications paved the way for the construction of a modern and independent woman, willing to improve herself, of becoming a citizen committed to the transformation of the country and the reality of times, ready to lead the fight for their rights...
