Abstract
El presente Trabajo de Fin de Máster tiene como objetivo el estudio de la censura aplicada a la traducción y se sirve, para ello, del estudio de caso de la obra "A farewell to arms", de Ernest Hemingway, cuyas traducciones al castellano publicadas durante la dictadura franquista tuvieron que pasar el filtro de la censura institucional, así como el de la autocensura editorial. Para alcanzar dicha meta, el trabajo aborda, en primer lugar, el marco teórico y el contexto histórico de la censura franquista. A continuación, plantea un análisis funcionalista de la obra en lengua de origen y se detiene en la conexión entre el autor, Ernest Hemingway, y la cultura meta de las traducciones objeto de estudio. Tras comprender el fenómeno de la censura y situar la obra en su contexto, el trabajo recoge las traducciones al castellano de la obra realizadas durante el período franquista, valiéndose, para ello, de los expedientes de censura disponibles en el Archivo General de la Administración. Una vez realizada esa labor preliminar, el estudio se centra en el análisis comparativo de cuatro de las traducciones más significativas de la obra, de acuerdo con una división temática de los fragmentos susceptibles de ser censurados elaborada con ese fin. En último lugar, el trabajo presenta unas conclusiones acerca de la efectividad de la censura, de la relación de la traducción con ella y del papel que el traductor desempeña en tal proceso.
The present Master’s dissertation is aimed at studying censorship applied to translation by means of the case study of "A Farewell to Arms", by Ernest Hemingway, whose translations into Spanish were subject to Francoist institutional censorship, as well as editorial self-censorship. In order to achieve said goal, this thesis starts by addressing the theoretical framework as well as the historical context of Francoist censorship. Next, it dives into a functionalist analysis of the work in its original language, in which special attention is paid to the relationship between the author, Ernest Hemingway, and the target culture of the translations to be analyzed. Having understood the phenomenon of censorship and having contextualized the work, this dissertation gathers the translations made into Spanish during the Francoist period, using, for that matter, the censorship records available at the Administration’s General Archives. Having carried out this preliminary task, this study focuses on a comparative analysis between four significant translations of the work, following a themed classification of fragments liable to be censored developed for that use. Lastly, this thesis presents some conclusions regarding the effectiveness of censorship, its relationship with translation, and the translators’ role within the censoring process.
