Abstract
“¡Ay, ser madre es lo más bonito de una mujer!” es una de las expresiones que con frecuencia se escuchan ante una mujer embarazada. Son emitidas tanto por familiares y acompañantes como por el propio personal sanitario que presta atención a lo largo del proceso. Reflejan las visiones socioculturales hegemónicas acerca de la maternidad y son mecanismos de socialización que orientan acerca de las emociones que las mujeres tienen que mostrar, vivir y emplear para dar sentido a sus experiencias. En nuestras investigaciones hemos recogido situaciones que visibilizan la diversidad de emociones que presentan las mujeres, y cómo algunas de ellas sugieren otras formas de significar su maternidad y el papel de esta en sus vidas.

“Ay! Motherhood is the most beautiful event in a woman’s life!” This is one of the commonest expressions that can be heard when a woman is pregnant. These expressions are articulated by family, relatives as well as by health professionals. They mirror hegemonic socio-cultural understandings about motherhood. They act as a mechanism of socialization that dictates how women should feel and define which emotions are appropriate to make sense of their experiences. This paper is based on our PhD projects and it examines the multiple ways in which women experience motherhood. We reflect on how some emotional experiences diverge from prescribed cultural norms and assumptions about motherhood, by doing so women are advocating for alternative models of motherhood.
