Abstract
En este artículo se examina la transformación del concepto de kultura en el Timor Oriental contemporáneo a partir del análisis de la renovación de las estructuras sociales del país. Teniendo en cuenta el debate sobre la revitalización de la tradición, sugerimos que, en oposición a ciertas hipótesis cuyo foco se sitúa bien en los regímenes ideológico-políticos, bien en las dimensiones económicas, el concepto de kultura puede ser también estudiado como un campo de enfrentamiento entre diversos modos de distinción social. Asimismo, planteamos que el uso de un discurso acerca de la noción de kultura que la considera como una carga no es solo una consecuencia de ese conflicto, sino igualmente un síntoma de la emergencia de un sistema híbrido de estratificación social.
This article examines the transformation of the concept of kultura in contemporary Timor-Leste through the analysis of the renewal of the country’s social structures. Taking into consideration the debate on the revitalization of tradition we argue that the concept of kultura can be better studied as a field of confrontation between modes of social differentiation, beyond explaining it through certain hypotheses that focus on the country’s political or religious regimes, its economic dimensions or power disputes between different socio-economic groups. Likewise, we propose that the discourse about the notion of kultura that considers it as a burden is not only a consequence of that conflict, but also a symptom of the emergence of a hybrid system of social stratification.
