Abstract
These words, uttered in 1938 by Cardinal Isidro Gomá, Archbishop of Toledo and Primate of Spain, before knowing the future configuration of the victors' political system, reflect the position of the figure who was the outstanding, leading head of the Spanish Church by the time of the Civil War, a conflict which was devastating the country. Cardinal Isidro Gomá y Tomás is usually identified by being the main apologist of the "España Nacional", the editor of the "Carta Colectiva" of the episcopate and the great defender of Franco before the Holy See. Nonetheless, Gomá's support for Franco was cautious about the possible future organisation of the political system after the victory over the Republic. Despite the persistent support for Catholicism, his approach was cautious, because of the dominion of the pro-fascist trends. Cardinal Gomá was always apprehensive of the growing meddling of Germany into the Spanish internal affairs. He extended that mistrust to "Falange", on his view the Reich's Trojan horse to dominate Spanish politics. In this paper, we will analyse the evolution of the attitudes of the Primate towards "Falange", from the beginning of the Civil War to the confrontation with Franco's government in the first stage of the post-war period. We will examine the opposition of the political models of Catholicism and "Falange" for the future of the nation, despite the apparent resemblance of both.
