Abstract
El artículo explora la relevancia de los cambios en el coste de oportunidad de estudiar para explicar la escolarización de adolescentes y jóvenes en las últimas décadas. Por una parte, plantea varias hipótesis acerca de los factores subyacentes a la realidad y la percepción de dicho coste. Por otra, presenta, y comenta a la vista de varias de esas hipótesis, una evidencia de las pautas de escolarización de ambos grupos en Europa occidental desde los años noventa, situando el caso español en este marco. La evidencia apunta a la necesidad de tener en cuenta factores de índole institucional (escolares) además de los meramente económicos para entender la relación entre coste de oportunidad de estudiar y escolarización.

This article explores the relevance of changes in the opportunity cost of studying in explaining the schooling patterns of teenagers and youth in the last decades. On one hand, the article puts forward several hypotheses on the factors that underlie the reality and perception of that cost. On the other, it presents, and comments based upon some of these hypotheses, a comparative evidence of the schooling patterns for both age groups in Western Europe since the nineties, placing the Spanish case in this context. That evidence suggests the need to consider institutional (school) factors in addition to the merely economic ones to understand the relationship between the opportunity cost of studying and schooling
