Abstract
En el año 2016 se cumple el bicentenario del fallecimiento del que fue nombrado Director Perpetuo del Real Colegio de San Carlos de Madrid, D. Manuel Luis Antonio Gimbernat y Arbós (1734-1816), un cirujano anatomista ilustrado español cuya biografía refleja las vicisitudes que en el tránsito de los siglos XVIII al XIX vivió la modernización de la enseñanza de la Medicina y Cirugía en España. La creación en Madrid del “San Carlos” fue un eslabón esencial en esa modernización, que se cristalizó en 1827 con la creación del Real Colegio de Medicina y Cirugía de San Carlos de Madrid.

The year 2016 marking the bicentenary of the death of Manuel Luis Antonio Gimbernat and Arbós (1734-1816), a Spanish Anatomist-surgeon of the Enlightenment who was appointed “Perpetual Director” of the Royal College of San Carlos of Madrid. His scientific biography reflects the vicissitudes That in the transition from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century lived the modernization of the teaching of medicine and surgery in Spain. The creation in Madrid of the “San Carlos” was the first link in this modernization, which crystallized in 1827 with the creation of the Royal College of Medicine and Surgery of San Carlos de Madrid.
