Abstract
Estudio histórico-jurídico sobre el establecimiento del primer museo nacional de pintura en España, a partir de la localización por el autor de documentación inédita conservada en tres archivos (dos en París y uno en Madrid). Este artículo hace una revisión de las principales fuentes documentales y bibliografía existentes sobre el Museo de Pinturas de José Bonaparte. Durante el mandato de este rey y aprovechando la supresión de conventos, el monarca decidió crear en Madrid un museo que reuniese los mejores cuadros de las distintas escuelas, procedentes de los patrimonios de aquellos conventos que habían sido suprimidos. El rey quiso también aportar una valiosa selección de cuadros de la Colección Real. De esta manera, bajo el mandato de ese monarca se hizo un gran esfuerzo en reunir y restaurar una extraordinaria colección de pintura para su exhibición en el nuevo Museo. Durante el proceso de institucionalización también se nombró un director-conservador y el personal necesario y se preparó algunas reglas de funcionamiento interno para el Museo. Pero diversas dificultades fueron lastrando el proyecto e impidieron el avance de los trabajos, especialmente por no poder contar con un edificio en condiciones y, sobre todo, por problemas de orden financiero. La ruina del Estado bonapartista puso punto final a una iniciativa pionera que, en todo caso, contribuyó a abrir camino al futuro Museo del Prado. El artículo incorpora algunos documentos inéditos sobre el Museo de Pinturas de José Bonaparte y sobre el edificio entonces ya conocido como el Museo del Prado, localizados en distintos fondos documentales en los que el autor ha trabajado.

Historical-legal study on the establishment of the first national museum of painting in Spain. The establishment of the first national museum of painting in Spain, based on the location by the author of unpublished documentation preserved in three archives (two in Paris and one in Madrid). This article reviews the main documentary sources and bibliography on the Museum of Paintings of José Bonaparte. During the mandate of this king and taking advantage of the suppression of convents, the monarch decided to create a museum in Madrid that would bring together the best paintings of the different schools, coming from the patrimony of those convents that had been suppressed. The king also wanted to contribute a valuable selection of paintings from the Royal Collection. Thus, under the mandate of this monarch, a great effort was made to gather and restore an extraordinary collection of paintings to be exhibited in the new collection of paintings to be exhibited in the new museum. During the institutionalization process, a director-conservator and the necessary staff were also appointed, and some internal operating rules for the Museum were prepared. But various difficulties the project and hindered the progress of the work, especially due to the lack of a suitable building and, above all, financial problems. The ruin of the Bonapartist State put an end to a pioneering initiative that, in any case, helped pave the way for the future Prado Museum. The article incorporates some unpublished documents on the Museum of Paintings of Joseph Bonaparte and on the building then known as the Prado Museum and about the building then known as the Museo del Prado, located in different documentary collections on which the author has worked.
