Abstract
Con el presente trabajo nos proponemos elaborar un estudio historiográfico sobre el poder imperial femenino en Bizancio entre los siglos IV y XI d.C. A través del análisis de las tradiciones clásicas y el desarrollo e implantación del cristianismo, abordaremos las estrategias que las mujeres imperiales desarrollaron para superar los impedimentos que, por razón de sexo, las consideraban incapacitadas y proscribían su participación en los asuntos públicos. Exploraremos las distintas posiciones desde las que, legalmente o de facto, las emperatrices proyectaron su influencia y alcanzaron la máxima autoridad en el imperio. Con el propósito de identificar patrones, continuidades y discontinuidades en un recorrido de ocho siglos, estudiaremos las formas de expresión que adoptó el poder femenino, su evolución y la contestación que hubo de enfrentar; también el modo en que sus contemporáneos lo registraron en las crónicas y cómo esas visiones han afectado a la historiografía más reciente. Con el fin de lograrlo, hemos establecido un enfoque cronológico que presentaremos, junto con otros conceptos historiográficos de los que nos hemos servido, en forma de marco teórico sobre el que fundamentaremos nuestra investigación. Por último, nos haremos eco de algunos de los principales debates en torno a la categoría histórica de las emperatrices bizantinas, y formularemos una serie de preguntas a las que trataremos de dar respuesta en las conclusiones.
This paper aims to conduct a historiographical study of feminine imperial power in Byzantium between the 4th and 11th centuries AD. Through the analysis of ancient traditions and the development and implementation of Christianity, we shall elaborate on the strategies that imperial women devised in order to overcome the hindrances that, based on sex, regarded them to be incapable and outlawed their participation in public affairs. We will also explore the different positions from which empresses, whether legally or in practice, projected their influence and achieved supreme authority within the empire. With the purpose set on identifying patterns, continuities, and discontinuities in an eight-century long journey, we shall study the ways in which feminine power found expression, its evolution, and the opposition it faced. Also, the way in which contemporaries of these women recorded them in their chronicles, and how these approaches have affected the most recent historiography. Aiming to achieve these points, we have established a chronological approach that, along with other historiographical concepts that we have borrowed, we will introduce by means of a theoretical framework from which we have substantiated our research. Lastly, we intend to discuss some of the main debates pertaining the historical category of Byzantine empresses, and also formulate a breadth of questions that we shall attempt to give an answer to in our conclusion.
