Abstract
El propósito del texto es hacer un rápido repaso sobre los orígenes y las características que presentan los museos etnográficos y antropológicos, de orientación exótica y colonial, creados en Europa durante el último tercio del siglo xix y comienzos del xx. Se anota su vinculación con el fenómeno de las exposiciones internacionales y coloniales, se advierte sobre las diferencias que pueden documentarse, presuntamente, entre los de orientación académica y los que presentan una intencionalidad más aplicada o comercial y, finalmente, se plantean ciertas dudas sobre su practicidad como elementos potenciadores o popularizadores del colonialismo.

This text overviews the origins and general characteristics of the ethnographic and anthropological museums created in Europe during the last third of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. They are put in connection with the phenomenon of nternational and colonial exhibitions, we note the differences that can be documented, presumably, between those with an academic orientation and those with a more applied or commercial intention, and, finally, certain doubts are raised about their practicality as elements that enhance or popularize colonialism.
