Abstract
After more than fifteen years of work in the description, classification and study of the material evidence of the ancient provenances in the collections of the Historical Library, ‐when it seemed that we knew almost everything about its typology and variety‐, we realized that we had not noticed a type of mark, which although very unusual in ancient books, was not completely unknown to us: the fire mark. This imprint, the result of applying a hot iron to the book's cuts in order to mark ownership or use, was a frequent practice in New Spain's colonial conventual libraries ‐although not only‐ until well into the 19th century. The systematic review, throughout the year 2022, of our most important Americanist collection, the Francisco Guerra collection, has allowed us to locate 28 different fire marks in a total of 33 specimens marked with this technique.
