Abstract

The present research explores the ethical component of sports journalism based on a study of the deontological principles that guide the discipline and the way in which they are reflected in the press. The objective is to produce a piece of work that will assist in understanding the ethical aspects involved in sports journalism so that it can being practiced honestly and offer a higher quality of service. Based on a study of the academic literature, the concepts of „ethics‟, „journalism‟ and „sports‟; „journalistic ethics‟, „sports journalism‟ and „ethics in sports‟; and „ethics in sports journalism‟ were explored. After establishing the theoretical framework, 31 sports journalism self-regulation documents were obtained from 15 different countries, as well as the International Sports Press Association. Using this material, the content was analysed to establish a catalogue of the fundamental ethical principles of sports journalism, which comprised 42 items. The principle about truth, objectivity and accuracy of information is revealed as the most important. A categorical analysis was then carried out and the items were grouped into thematic sections based on their function. This enabled us to confirm that the main mission of the codes is to establish the journalist‟s responsibility with regard to social actors. Specifically, the audience receives the most attention, with almost half of the norms designed to protect it. These results were compared to those from an analogous study on ethics codes for journalism as a whole, and a high correlation was found between both. This suggests that sports journalism is equipped with a strong ethical base that makes it possible to practice it in accordance with a model that is fully aware of the social responsibility it bears. Additionally, some principles unique to sports journalism were found, reflecting its specific nature; of note was the promotion of sports values. To complete the quantitative approach, an analysis was conducted of the doctrinal content of the 42 principles extracted, offering a study of the concepts and the ways in which the codes are set down...
