Abstract
La presente tesis doctoral tiene por objeto la aproximación a la figura del hispanista estadounidense Archer M. Huntington (1870-1955) desde la perspectiva de su vinculación con la vida pública española durante un periodo temporal que abarca las tres últimas décadas del siglo xix y la primera mitad del siglo xx. Filántropo y coleccionista, Archer M. Huntington destinó una gran parte de su fortuna a promover proyectos e infraestructuras culturales destacando por encima de todos ellos la Hispanic Society of America, museo y biblioteca públicos exclusivamente dedicados a la cultura hispánica que fundó en Nueva York en 1904 y que abrió sus puertas al público en 1908. Reunió una excelsa colección de objetos hispánicos de diversas disciplinas, desde pintura y escultura hasta arqueología, numismática, textiles o cerámica y una biblioteca de incalculable valor guiado por la aspiración romántica de condensar el alma de un pueblo en un museo. Bebiendo en las fuentes del hispanismo estadounidense decimonónico, acometió su proyecto hispanista en unos años en los que en Estados Unidos se desató un inusitado interés por la cultura hispánica y destacó como uno de los principales promotores del hispanismo erudito en su país. Sin embargo, más allá del legado que dejó para el mundo de la cultura hispánica la investigación llevada a cabo ha perseguido profundizar en su interacción con el contexto político, social y cultural español. Su perfil público como mecenas del hispanismo estuvo condicionado por las relaciones de sociabilidad y amistad que entabló con algunos de los más destacados representantes de la sociedad intelectual y política de su tiempo. Atraído por la intensa actividad intelectual de aristócratas, artistas e intelectuales, y animado por un mismo talante, Archer M. Huntington llegó a formar parte de las redes de sociabilidad que se fueron gestando en torno a la cultura española durante las tres primeras décadas del siglo xx en lo que se ha denominado la Edad de Plata de la cultura. Participó con sus ideas y su dinero en la promoción de iniciativas museísticas y educativas en España que contribuyesen a revalorizar la cultura española conforme dictaban las ideas regeneracionistas. En paralelo fue capaz de ofrecer desde la Hispanic Society of America una plataforma en Nueva York para la promoción de artistas y escritores españoles contemporáneos convirtiéndose en un referente para la internacionalización de la cultura hispánica...
The aim of this doctoral thesis is to look at the American Hispanist Archer M. Huntington (1870-1955) from the point of view of his connections to Spanish public life during a period that takes in the final three decades of the nineteenth century and the first half of the 20th century. Archer M. Huntington was a philanthropist and collector who devoted a large part of his fortune to the advancement of Hispanic Studies and cultural infrastructures. The most prominent of these was the Hispanic Society of America, a public museum and library exclusively dedicated to Hispanic culture which he founded in New York in 1904 and which opened its doors to the public in 1908. It housed an excellent collection of Hispanic objects from diverse disciplines from painting and sculpture to archaeology, numismatics, textiles and ceramics, as well as a collection of books of incalculable value guided by the romantic aspiration of condensing the soul of Spain in a museum. Drawing on the sources of nineteenth-century American Hispanism, Archer M. Huntington took on his Hispanist project at a time when an uncommon interest in Hispanic culture developed in the United States and he stood out as one of the main champions of scholarly Hispanism in his country. However, apart from the legacy that he left the world of the Hispanic culture, the research has sought to study in depth his interaction with the Spanish political, social and cultural context. His public profile as a patron of Hispanism was conditioned by the friendships and social connections that he developed with some of the most outstanding representatives of intellectual and political society of his time. Attracted by the intense intellectual activity of aristocrats, artists and intellectuals and urged on by that same spirit, Archer M. Huntington became part of the social networks developed around the Spanish culture during the first three decades of the 20th century, a. period which has come to be known as the Silver Age of the culture. He contributed with his ideas and his money to the promotion of museological and educational initiatives in Spain in line with the ideas of Regenerationism. At the same time he was able to offer through the Hispanic Society of America a platform in New York for the promotion of contemporary Spanish artists and writers, becoming a benchmark for the internationalisation of Hispanic culture...
