Abstract
Entre los siglos XVI y XVII los asuntos españoles estuvieron más que nunca presentes fuera de España, dando lugar a una nueva percepción de España en Europa que fue indudablemente eficaz durante la Edad moderna. Los historiadores han insistido en cómo esta percepción fue ensombrecida por la leyenda negra, pero lo cierto es que la propaganda antiespañola estuvo ceñida a un ámbito limitado, eminentemente político. La vida artística desvela una historia bien distinta, de íntima estimación y compenetración entre las sociedades europeas. Se ha reparado poco en cómo la percepción del Siglo de Oro fuera de España consistió principalmente en un conjunto de músicas, danzas y comedias que recorrieron el continente, penetrando en la vida italiana, que era el gran centro irradiador de la cultura. Son bien conocidas las pistas de este aire español que cautivó a Italia, pero apenas se ha dado la razón histórica del fenómeno...
The international relevance of Spanish affairs in the 16th and 17th centuries gave birth to a new perception of Spain in Europe, which was very effective during the Early Modern Age. Historians have claimed that the black legend cast a shadow over such perception, but the truth is that this kind of propaganda was mostly circumscribed to political matters. The arts suggest that there was a completely different story of mutual admiration and rapprochement between European societies. The most remarkable manifestation of the Spanish Golden Age outside Spain was a stream of music, dance and theatre that went through Europe, breaking into Italy, which had traditionally been the irradiating centre of the arts. The hints of this so-called «Spanish air» are well known, but the history of this phenomenon has remained mostly unexplained...
