Esta tesis doctoral examina la migración internacional de retiro a través del caso de personas jubiladas procedentes del norte de Europa que se han establecido en la comarca de la Marina Alta, en Alicante, España. Este tipo de movilidad, que ha ganado visibilidad desde la década de 1990, se inscribe dentro de las llamadas migraciones por estilo de vida. En sus primeras etapas, quienes la protagonizan experimentan una mejora notable en su calidad de vida, motivada por el clima, el coste de vida más asequible y un entorno percibido como relajado y saludable. Sin embargo, el paso del tiempo y el avance de la edad conllevan un deterioro físico progresivo y una creciente necesidad de cuidados, lo que plantea desafíos significativos tanto para los migrantes como para los sistemas sociales del país receptor...
This thesis examines international retirement migration through the case of retired individuals from Northern Europe who have settled in the Marina Alta region of Alicante, Spain. This form of mobility, which has gained visibility since the 1990s, is part of what is known as lifestyle migration. In its early stages, those who undertake it typically experience a significant improvement in quality of life, driven by factors such as the Mediterranean climate, lower cost of living, and a more relaxed and health-promoting environment. However, as time passes and age advances, physical decline and increasing care needs emerge, presenting significant challenges for both the migrants and the host country’s social systems...
