Abstract
El objetivo fundamental de esta tesis es el estudio de la figura del escultor Juan Luis Vassallo (Cádiz 1908- Madrid 1986). Se ha pretendido llevar a cabo un completo estudio de su vida vinculado con su obra, por ello el trabajo aparece acompañado por el catálogo completo de su obra escultórica. Además se sitúa a Vassallo en el contexto específico de la escultura del momento, profundizándose también en el proceso técnico utilizado por el escultor, así como en su pensamiento estético. Resultados y conclusiones Vassallo desarrolló su actividad como escultor y pedagogo por distintas ciudades españolas y además vivió un convulso ambiente político. Estas circunstancias afectarán en su estilo. Vassallo se muestra en su etapa de formación cercano al realismo castellano que pudo aprender en Madrid, tendencia a la que aparece aferrado también en su etapa abulense. Posteriormente con el estallido de la Guerra Civil, desarrollará su actividad en Andalucía trabajando, entre otras cosas, restauración e imaginería, en las que realiza interesantes aportaciones. Pero en esta etapa de madurez también le vemos volcado con el estudio de unos hermosos desnudos mediterráneos, en los que se refugia como una forma de regresar de nuevo a la belleza clásica, en un deseo quizá de vuelta al orden. Se asentará finalmente en Madrid en su etapa final. Vassallo, fue un artista muy completo que trabajó numerosos materiales y muy diferentes temáticas, siempre ligado a la figura humana y a la naturaleza. También destacó como restaurador y profesor, pues ejerció la Cátedra de Modelado tanto en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Sevilla como en la de Madrid. Podemos considerar que Vassallo ha sido uno de los artistas más destacados de la plástica española del siglo XX.
"Introduction and objectives" The main objective of this thesis is the study of the sculptor Juan Luis Vassallo (Cádiz, 1908 – Madrid, 1986). A comprehensive study of his life connected with his work was conducted and for this reason the thesis is accompanied by a catalogue of his sculptures. Vassallo is viewed in the specific context of the sculpture at that time thus deepening the understanding of the technical process used by the sculptor, as well as his aesthetic thinking. "Results and conclusions" Vassallo was an active sculptor and educator in various Spanish cities and also lived in a turbulent political environment, these circumstances affected his style. Vassallo shows signs of Castilian realism in his formative stages which could have been learnt in Madrid, a tendency that also appears in during his time in Avila. Later, with the outbreak of the Civil War, he continued his work in Andalusia expanding into restoration and imagery amongst other things, for which he made interesting contributions. However at this stage of his life he had also turned to beautiful Mediterranean nude studies, in which he takes refuge as a way of returning back to classical beauty, a desire perhaps to return to order. He finally settled in Madrid in his later stages. Vassallo, was a very complete artist who worked numerous materials and different themes, always linked to the human figure and nature. He was also highlighted as a restorer and teacher, serving as the Head of Modelling Faculty both in the School of Fine Arts of Seville and Madrid. We can consider that Vassallo has been one of the most outstanding artists of the twentieth century Spanish art
