Abstract
La presente investigación se centra en el estudio histórico e historiográfico de la estancia del artista brasileño José Leonilson Bezerra Dias (Fortaleza 1957 – São Paulo 1993) en Madrid durante el año 1981. Habiendo sido uno de los artistas más internacionales de su generación, Leonilson demostró a lo largo de toda su exitosa producción una innegable vocación cosmopolita. Sin embargo, a diferencia de otros de sus destinos como Italia, Holanda, Alemania o Estados Unidos, este temprano viaje a España no ha sido debidamente investigado por su biografía oficial. Tratado aquí como objeto de estudio, se ambiciona elaborar un relato crítico de la que fue la primera experiencia del artista en el extranjero, y que supuso el inicio de su carrera profesional. Se busca, de este modo, examinar la impronta que dicho evento dejó en su creación artística, en su desarrollo profesional y en su vida particular. Analizar este período todavía no explorado, conlleva además ampliar el corpus de la obra del artista, al mismo tiempo que se expande el arco temporal considerado por su historiografía. Historiografía que, también a su vez, se ve sometida a una profunda revisión debido a las narrativas “excéntricas” e incluso contradictorias producidas por la especificidad de este evento singular. Enmarcada en el contexto de los estudios culturales, esta tesis aplica las herramientas metodológicas de los estudios biográficos, combinándolas con las aportaciones de los estudios latinoamericanos, las teorías de género y queer. De esta manera, la investigación se extiende mucho más allá de la simple ambición biográfica tradicional pues, sin caer en el modelo elemental resuelto con el estudio de la vida y obra del artista, este trabajo se detiene en la situación histórica, social y política que vivió Leonilson en Madrid. A través de testimonios personales, investigaciones especializadas y la revisión bibliográfica y hemerográfica, se revisan los círculos en los que se movió el artista durante su estancia en la capital española, para probar el status de Madrid como un contexto crucial para el brasileño, no solo como lugar de producción si no también de formación artística. The present research revolves around the historical and historiographical study of Brazilian artist José Leonilson Bezerra Dias (Fortaleza, 1957 – São Paulo, 1993) stay in Madrid in the year 1981. Considered one of the most international artists in his generation, Leonilson showed an undeniable cosmopolitan vocation throughout his whole successful production. Nevertheless, differently from his other destinations such as Italy, the Netherlands, Germany or the United States, this early trip to Spain has not been properly explored by his official biography. By handling such experience as an object of study, the aim is to elaborate a critical narrative of this artist’s first experience abroad that marked beginning of his professional career. In this way, there is an attempt to examine the impression such event had in his artistic creation, his professional development and his private life. Analyzing this still unexplored period also involves expanding the corpus of the artist’s work while extending the time span that his historiography has considered. At the same time, such historiography is subjected to a thorough review due to the “eccentric” and even contradictory narratives produced by the specificity of this unique event. Framed in the context of cultural studies, this thesis applies the methodological tools of biographic studies, thus combining them with the contributions of Latin American studies, gender and queer theories. In this way, the research goes way beyond a mere traditional biographical ambition, because by not falling into the elemental model of the study of Leonilson’s life and work, this paper focuses on the historical, social and political situation he lived in Madrid. A review of the circles where the artist spent time during his stay in Madrid was made through personal testimonies, specialized research and a bibliographical and press review in order to prove the status that Madrid acquired as a crucial context for Leonilson, being not only a place of production, but also a place of artistic training. And, consequently, this study enables an understanding of Madrid’s own history and some of the ways in which modernity was developed and sensed in this city from a unique perspective...
