Abstract
El tema principal de esta tesis se enmarca dentro del mundo de las prisiones del siglo XIX, habiendo utilizado para ello un caso específico, el presidio del Canal de Isabel II, un establecimiento penal que permaneció vigente entre 1851 y 1867. La investigación se ha encaminado a través de una doble vertiente, cuyos objetivos se han dirigido a conocer, por un lado, la vida que llevaron a cabo los presidiarios en este lugar, habiendo sido necesario abordar diferentes puntos de vista, que guardan relación con los aspectos penitenciarios, penales, económicos, laborales, alimenticios y sanitarios; por otro lado, proponer un modelo de análisis de los presidios españoles de obras públicas del siglo XIX por medio de un estudio de caso, señalando todos aquellos aspectos que consideramos necesarios deben abordarse al acometer un estudio de este tipo. The aim of this doctoral thesis revolves around the penitentiary context of 19th century Spain. Through the study of a specific case of study, the prison of the Canal de Isabel II, this research tries to analyze the world of prisons and their legal context during the queen Isabel II’s reign, specifically between 1851 and 1867. The research focused on two central topics. On one hand, the life that the prisoners carried out in this place, combining different approaches related to penitentiary, criminal, economic, labor, food and health matters; on the other hand, the design of model for studying the Spanish public work prisons in the 19th century, pointing out all those aspects that we consider necessary take into account when starting a research of this type. Through these main axes, a specific and exhaustive study has been carried out trying to contribute to the knowledge of that subject. The purpose of the Canal de Isabel II prison was not only referred to the confinement, but also to apply the utilitarian concept of the work in prison.
