Abstract
En el trabajo que presentamos hemos procedido al estudio de las actitudes lingüísticas hacia el español y hacia el inglés de los hispanos, en general, y de los hispanos con formación universitaria, en particular, residentes en el área de Nueva Inglaterra (Estados Unidos).Nuestra investigación se suma así a los cuantiosos estudios que analizan algún aspecto del español de los Estados Unidos. No obstante, dado que la mayoría de los estudios se enmarcan geográficamente en los enclaves tradicionalmente poblados por hispanos, como California, Florida, Nueva York o Texas, consideramos necesario expandir las investigaciones hacia zonas que han recibido una menor atención, como lo es el área de Nueva Inglaterra, conformada por los estados de Maine, Nuevo Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island y Connecticut. Asimismo, nuestro estudio sociolingüístico no se concibe como un análisis aislado de algunos aspectos lingüísticos del español estadounidense, sino que tiene como objetivo presentar, por un lado, un estado de la cuestión del español en los Estados Unidos desde los puntos de vista lingüístico y extralingüístico, y, por otro, ofrecer un análisis estadístico concreto de las actitudes lingüísticas de los hispanos que residen en Nueva Inglaterra en comparación a las de los residentes de otros estados...
In this study we have proceeded to analyse the linguistic attitudes of the Hispanic population, overall, and the Hispanic population with University education, in particular, that lives in the area of New England (United States) towards Spanish and English. Our investigation joins numerous other studies that analyse some aspect of the Spanish language in the United States. However, due to the fact that most of the studies are geographically framed in the traditional enclaves populated by Hispanics, such as California, Florida, New York or Texas, we deemed it necessary to expand on existing research toward less studied areas, as is the case of the New England region, which is formed by the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. In addition, our sociolinguistic research was not conceived as an isolated study of some linguistic aspects of US Spanish; rather, its objective, on the one hand, is to present the current state of affairs of the Spanish language in the United States from linguistic and extralinguistic perspectives, and, on the other hand, to offer a concrete statistical analysis of the linguistic attitudes of those Hispanics who reside in New England in comparison to those who live in other states...
